Problem with "Best"

50 Best is beginning today. I think people forget that it means nothing. The criteria William Reeds Ltd set for "Best" nominations is "no particular criteria". The list is generated by a group of people each nominating from a different notion of best. The classic notion of "wisdom-of-the-crowds": Is the story of the 1906 country fair in Plymouth, 800 people participated in a contest to estimate the weight of a slaughtered and dressed ox. Francis Galton observed that the median guess, 1207 pounds, was accurate within 1% of the true weight of 1198 pounds. There is wisdom in getting a bunch of people to vote for a particular thing. But it only works if they all know what they are voting for. Galton would not have got an accurate guess of the ox's weight if he had just told the crowd to give a number based on "no particular criteria", even if everyone in the crowd were "ox weight guessing experts".
