Most people in service work mindlessly. It is the symptom from HR. The floor position is just the floor position. Just like the tyre changer at the Ford factory is the same as any other tyre changer at the Ford factory. So working the floor, we subconsiously internalize that we are replacable.
This is a self-fulfilling prophercy. We know the point of hospitality is connection and that everyone connects with each other differently. I think the kids call it "vibes" or "wavelengths"
We are thus in an industry where effectiveness cannot be measured. We should act like it, we should aim to connect with our guest to the best of our ability and stop seeing ourselves as arms and legs that carry a tray around.
The world has changed, a bottle of vodka and a carton of soda gets to my door cheaper than 2 vodka sodas at any establishment. Only bars who give guest a reason to visit, more than alcohol, will survive the next decade.
